organized by Right Track, an NGO that does rights-based work with slum dwellers. The NGO I've been volunteering with, The Calcutta Samaritans, also participated.

I happened across this zoo because it is across the street from a University of Calcutta campus, where I was visiting a professor. Admission was 10 rupees. The grounds were fairly well maintained and seemed to be a destination for family picnics. There were also lots of couples. So it was a combination of very happy people and very unhappy animals.

A couple of days ago I visited Prof. Ram Bhagat at this institute. I have been corresponding with him for a few months, and he was the Indian sponsor of my Fulbright application. He was great to meet, extremely helpful, and had a lot to say about my research. I also really liked the institute. The campus was pretty, and they had a great library devoted to population-related sources. A huge section on migration too.
